Studio Work

The paintings presented here have been produced in my studio for galleries, private collectors and myself.

My studio work often involves working from my imagination often with narrative undertones. My plein-air work fuels this output.

Skyline – Northern Darks and Northern lights

This collection of work rose out of a single journey along the Norwegian coast. This was not an exercise in representation. Most of the places in these paintings don’t exist. Instead the work attempts to find new ways to touch us and connect us to this remarkable environment.

Lighter Side of Dark

Darker Side of Light

Work in this section was part of a large solo exhibition “The Darker Side of Light” – January 22 – February 26 2011 at the former home of John Ruskin, Brantwood, Coniston LA21 8AD

”The pinnacle objective to each painting, in most of this collection, is to attain exquisite radiance and to create atmosphere through a subtle use of chiaroscuro.

“My palette has been influenced by Samuel Palmer, Ruskin, John Piper and J.M.W. Turner and in some cases, inevitably, so has my subject matter. Contemporary artists Sophie Jodoin and Ken Currie and old masters such as Blake have also been an influential reference point in my figurative work.
“What these artists all have in common is their astonishing and dramatic use of light and/or a richness and depth to their palette. It is this which holds the key to my own work.”

Two pictures in this gallery have inspired works of poetry – see the Testimonials page for details
